Understanding IQ

IQ can describe an average tendency without determining an individual outcome. Even when intelligence is strongly genetic, a parent’s score does not reliably predict a particular child’s score.

A child of a smart parent is more likely to be smart on average—and still has roughly a one-in-three chance of scoring more than 15 IQ points below that parent. Genetic influence does not turn inheritance into a photocopier.

A tendency is not a guarantee

The confusion begins when you move from a statement about groups to a prediction about one person. Parental IQ can shift the average likelihood for children without fixing where any particular child will land. That is why “smart parents tend to have smarter children” and “this smart parent’s child may score substantially lower” can both be true. The reusable model is to separate probability from destiny: a factor may matter strongly while leaving considerable variation in individual outcomes.

Translate labels into probabilities

When someone predicts a child’s ability from a parent’s intelligence, ask for the distribution rather than accepting the label: How often do children differ substantially from the parent, and by how much? That converts “smart family” from a verdict into the uncertain tendency the evidence actually supports.
