Observed association is evidence to investigate, not proof of causal power. A credible causal claim needs comparison cases and a mechanism that can distinguish causation from confounding, reverse direction, and coincidence.

A top JEE candidate credits a particular study routine for their success. But unsuccessful candidates may have followed exactly the same routine—the apparent cause stands out only because the failures are missing from view.

Make the causal arrow earn its direction

Correlation tells you that two things appear together; it cannot tell you why. The routine may produce high scores, high-potential students may prefer that routine, or some third factor—better teaching, more time, family support—may produce both. To separate these stories, look for matched failures, successes achieved without the supposed cause, and a causal mechanism connecting the steps. Each comparison removes an alternative explanation; the mechanism says what should change, in which direction, and why.

Studying only the successful candidate selects on the outcome. Comparing unsuccessful students who used the same routine tests whether the routine has explanatory power rather than merely appearing in a winner’s story.

“Correlation is not causation” can be a safeguard against weak inference—or a tactic for dismissing accumulating evidence. The tobacco industry kept invoking uncertainty even after later studies supplied mechanisms and direct causal evidence.

Scepticism can also become propaganda

Demanding causal evidence does not mean refusing to conclude forever. No single correlation settles the question, but converging mechanisms and direct evidence can make causation the best-supported account. At that point, repeating the slogan protects doubt rather than scientific care.

Build the missing comparison

Tomorrow, when someone credits an outcome to one habit, method, or policy, write down three checks: who used it and failed, who succeeded without it, and what step-by-step mechanism would make it work. Treat the claim as causal only to the extent that it survives all three.
